Uses of Herbs in Aromatherapy

Herbs Used In Aromatherapy

Herbs are mainly used to extract essential oils and make candles. These herbs are high in medicinal value and enhance physical and mental health and also strengthen the immune system.

Aromatherapy herbs have made a contribution to all the ancient civilizations. Most of the civilizations have recognized and have actively used the herbs for their antiseptic, sedative and stimulant properties. The use of any herb is done after a careful research and study. Some herbs can be used directly while others may have to be refined before use. Perfumes can be made from the oils extracted from the aromatherapy herbs. Aromatherapy plants have a natural compound which gives them their unique aroma. Different parts of a plant like seeds, flowers, stems, leaves and roots can be used for its aromatic properties.

Functions of Aromatic Herbs

Aromatic herbs depending on their properties can be used for the following purposes:

• Purgers which help fight the harmful substances in the body.

• Tonics that help in reducing the various deficiencies in the body.

• Dispersers distribute the constituents that have become stagnant in the body.

• Consolidators act as astringents, work on the areas of weakness.

There are so many aromatherapy herbs to learn about but these include:

• Bergamot

• Cedar wood

• Clary Sage

• Frankincense

• Geranium

• Ginger

• Juniper berry

• Lavender

Herbs and oils are embodied with these frequencies or vibrations. Each herb carries its own energy. Since herbs tend to be fragrant, we can often induce change through smelling or breathing in the herb. That is how the use of incense, perfumes, teas and spices can affect us. Aromatherapy is also based on this premise.

Lavender, one of the most commonly used essential oil in aromatherapy, is considered to have a calming scent, and therefore is the ideal candidate for relieving anxiety, headaches, and stress. The scent also has a sleep inducing quality and has been used to treat insomnia. There have also been findings of lavender helping depression. This lovely essential oil will combat your anger and frustration while improving your spirits.

The lavender essential oil along with the dried lavender buds have become blessings packed into my little eye pillow. If I am tired and want to fall asleep, I warm the pillow up in the microwave for a couple of seconds and then I doze off. When I come home with that seemingly never-ending headache, I take my eye pillow out of the freezer and ice away my pains.

The most effective method of using essential oils is surprisingly enough not orally, but through inhalation or external application methods. When taken internally the oils mix with digestive juices and other matter, therefore changing the essential oil's chemistry. External methods that you use to apply essential oils involves but is not limited to: body oils, compresses, baths, lotions, foot baths & rubs, applications on certain pressure points pertaining to particular areas of the body, inhalations (steam or direct from the bottle or on a tissue), room sprays and perfumes.
